In addition to using our photography as a way to share the wonders of nature with others, we actively work with conservation groups to help protect wildlife viewing areas and habitat. We are leaders of an Alaskan group known as Friends of McNeil River in efforts to protect viewing opportunities of the largest concentration of brown bears that occurs in the world. Over 60 brown bears can be seen at one time at the McNeil River falls. With Leo as Chairman and Dorothy as newsletter editor/Treasurer. and the help of many other supporters, Friends of McNeil River established a 130,000 acre refuge adjacent to the world famous McNeil River brown bear viewing area, and obtained a ban on bear hunting in the refuge. We feel the greatest threat to wildlife and wilderness experiences is increased pressure from humans. The Screen savers we offer for PC's enable you to share them with your coworkers and family. To expand our help and help others become involved, we offer our monetary and/or physical support as well as this reference to groups who are making a difference for wildlife. We encourage you to contact these groups to see how you can help. AlaskaNatural History Association is an educational nonprofit organization focused on the natural, cultural, and historical resources of Alaska. They provide resource information in over thirty public visitor centers throughout the state such as guide books, maps and videos about Alaska's public lands. They also publish site-specific information about Alaska's parks, forests and refuges which are distributed to booksellers, schools and libraries. Their resource information is available by mail, phone and fax through their free Alaska Books catalog. The Alaska Wildlife Alliance is a non-profit organization based in Anchorage, Alaska. We have been in existence since 1978. Our mission is the protection of Alaska's natural wildlife for its intrinsic value as well as for the benefit of present and future generations. The Alliance advocates an ecosystem approach that represents the non-consumptive values of wildlife.
Much of our strategy focuses on taking proactive positions on wildlife issues that encourage the conservation community, government agencies and the private sector to work together in finding positive solutions. We have done this in promoting protection for the Kenai brown bear, seeking federal listing for the highly endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale, and defeating in the Supreme Court a move by a lower court to overturn all future public ballot initiatives having to do with wildlife in Alaska, to list but a few examples. The Alliance is leading the campaign along with a host of other organizations and individuals in seeking full legal protection for the world famous Toklat wolves. The Toklat family was the first group of wolves to have been studied in the wild. They have survived as one continuous family for more than 60 years, making them the oldest known wolf lineage in existence. More people have seen the Toklat wolves than any group in the world. Achieving protection for the Toklats would set an important precedent, given that it would be the first time in Alaska that any group of wolves was allowed to move over its entire range without being at risk of being legally shot or trapped. You can help by contacting our web site at http://www.akwildlife.org/ and filling out the electronic postcard that asks the respective state and federal government agencies to make it happen.
