Friends of Animals Calls for
Boycott of Alaska Tourism
in Response to Wolf "Control"
The following courtesy Friends of Animals: March 12, 2004
As aerial wolf-killing in Alaska accelerates, so does the urgency of citizens across the country organizing Howl-Ins to boycott travel to Alaska.
Since January 2004, at least 100 wolves have been chased down and shot in the Nelchina basin and McGrath regions of Alaska, where the state sponsors aerial wolf "control" programs. In the last two weeks, the Board of Game expanded the shooting spree to include bears and land in the McGrath area beyond the original 1,728 square miles, doubling it to 3,588 square miles, and this week opened additional areas -- encompassing about 20,000 square miles to wolf "control". The no-hunting or trapping buffer zone outside of Denali National Park was also reduced, leaving it sorely inadequate for Denali's wolves.

*continued...
Tourism is a 2 billion dollar-a-year industry in Alaska -- twice what it was just 10 years ago. From eco-tours to cruises, Alaska's natural beauty and free-living animals attract people to spend their tourist dollars there. These are the very aspects of Alaska that the Alaskan Game Board's decision seeks to destroy. Through a boycott, we can all put economic pressure on the Murkowski administration.
Please boycott travel to Alaska until the wolf-shooting plan is canceled. You can also write a letter to Governor Murkowski, write to your newspaper, or sponsor your own Howl-In to get more people informed and involved (http://www.friendsofanimals.org/wolves/index.html). You can ask your friends, family, coworkers and neighbors to write to the Governor. A handwritten letter has more impact than a form letter, which has more impact than an e-mail.
Please contact the governor and tell him that you'll vacation elsewhere and support the tourism boycott of Alaska!

We also want to thank the following organizations who are leading the courageous effort to reverse bad wildlife policy in Alaska. We encourage you to find out more, and help the effort by considering a donation to the following:
We are very greatful to have the help of The Alaska Wildlife Alliance.
We are also indebted to Friends of Animals for their efforts in helping us reach the rest of the country.
Our friends at Defenders of Wildlife also deserve thanks for standing up for our wolves, too.
